DARTH VADER #3
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Salvador Larroca
Vader #3 introduces Doctor Aphra: one of the most interesting and exciting new characters in the Star Wars universe. Since the character ends up with her own series, I can’t be alone in that assessment! Aphra is a younger, spunkier, greedier, female Han Solo who is even less sure that she just might be a good guy.
She’s not a smuggler, but an archaeologist with the flair for illegal tech. She’s definitely a scoundrel and occasionally ‘pals’ around with a Wookiee—but that’s later. Here she gets recruited by Vader for a special mission.
Their first meeting shows us lot about her character. Aphra is cautious but irreverent. Even though Darth Vader has shown up unexpectedly both to rescue and recruit her, she stays completely focused on the job she was doing. She knows Vader, his reputation, his brutality. She sees his arrival as both a tremendous opportunity but a terrific danger. And it is irresistible to her.
So about that job—it involved her stealing and reactivating two homicidal droids that are essentially C3PO and R2D2 from the darkest timeline. You just know these three are going to cause a lot of trouble.
